Ever Had Buyer’s Remorse?

Have you ever had buyer’s remorse? I’m sure we all have, to some extent or the other.

A few years ago, I leased a new car, a Hyundai Tucson. I began to drive the car around and at first, I was enjoying it very much. Then I went to visit a friend. He came out to see the new car. He said, “Wow, you got a Tux-ON.” Oh no, it’s not a Tux-ON, it’s a TOO-sohn.

As I continued to drive around for a few more days, I noticed there were other flashier cars flying past me on the highway. There was a posh looking Mercedes GLC 300 and sleek looking BMW X5. I began to develop a bit of disdain for the Tux-ON …

I thought maybe I should have chosen a Santa Fe instead. Being a “man of the cloth” a Santa Fe (Holy Faith) would have been more appropriate.

I began to develop an acute case of buyer’s remorse.

Why am I sharing this with you? It is simply this: I want us all to know that when God sent Jesus to purchase us back to himself, he never had any buyer’s remorse. Someone once said, “God is not disillusioned with you; he’s never had any illusions about you in the first place!”

He knows every single thing about each and every one of us. He knows the good, the bad and even the ugly. He’s well-acquainted with the secrets we’d rather take to the grave. He knows it all. Yet he was willing to pay an immeasurable price – the life of Jesus – in order to be reconciled to you and me. What a gracious God!

How do I know that this is true, and not just an idea based on a semi-funny illustration? How do I know that God didn’t have any buyer’s remorse when he purchased us back to himself with the precious blood of Jesus? (see 1 Peter 1:18-19)

A line in a letter written to the church in Rome tells me so. It goes, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” While we were hostile, helpless, hopeless. While we were still enemies with – and disconnected from – God, Jesus died for us. This proves to us with undisputed clarity that God loves us unconditionally, remorselessly and limitlessly.

You know that you are loved when you are loved at your very worst.

That’s what God has done for each and every one of us, individually and as a human race in general (See Revelation 5:9).

If you are a follower of Jesus, celebrate this gift of being loved by your Creator who also is your Redeemer and Good Father. Don’t let the noise of the circumstances of life drown out his whispers of deep affection for you.

If you are not yet a follower of Jesus and you are in touch with that sense of being disconnected from God and your purpose, I encourage you to embrace this life-giving, life-saving gospel truth. Look into Jesus. Let him change your life. Let him show you how much you mean to him. Let him give you a sense of purpose. Let God love you!

No buyer’s remorse.
